How to Pull Out Old Rail Spikes-Rail Spike Puller

Rail spike is one of the most common rail fasteners in fix the steel rails to the sleepers. It plays an important role in ensuring the safety of railroad. Railroad spike can be classified into two types: dog spike and screw spike. Dog spike can be only used on wooden sleepers, and screw spike is used on concrete sleepers. After long time’s using, dog spike may be lossening and rusting, it need to replace a new one to ensure the safety of railway track.

Now I will introduce a tool, which is used to pull out the dog spike in the sleeper efficiently, rail spike puller, which is composed of a puller head and a puller bar. It is widely used in rail track maintenance. The head of the rail spike puller is fork shaped and connected with the bar vertically. It uses the lever principle to make the spike overcome earth gravity and lift the weight from the ground and be displaced.

Safety Requirement When Using Rail Spike Puller

• Rail spike puller must be stuck tightly with the head of spike, straddling and shouldering puller is strictly prohibited.  
• Don’t put hand under the steel rail during the process of pulling.
• Keep certain safe distance one by one, when many workers pulling at the same time.
• If there is circuit on the rail track, the puller must be used with insulated bush in case of electric leakage.
• The holding position should be away from the rail track, and do not overexert, and notice the people around.
• If there is snow or ice, be careful and avoid slipping and hurting.
